English Translation
It was narrated from [Ibn 'Umar] (رضي الله عنهما) — via Muhammad ibn Yazid al-Wasiti, from Sufyan ibn Husayn, from al-Zuhri, from Salim, from his father — that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had written down [the rules for] zakat and had not sent it out to his tax collectors until he died. Abu Bakr then brought it out and acted on it until he died, then 'Umar brought it out and acted on it. ['Umar died and it was still attached to his bequest.] He said: 'In it was written: On camels — for every five, one sheep, up to twenty-four. When they reach twenty-five: a bint makhad [one-year-old female], up to thirty-five; if there is no bint makhad, then an ibn labun [two-year-old male]. When they exceed thirty-five: an ibnat labun [two-year-old female], up to forty-five. When they exceed forty-five by one: a hiqqah [three-year-old female], up to sixty. When they exceed sixty: a jadha'a [four-year-old female], up to seventy-five. When they exceed seventy-five: two ibnat labun, up to ninety. When they exceed ninety: two hiqqa [three-year-old females], up to one hundred and twenty. When camels become [very] numerous: for every fifty — one hiqqah, and for every forty — one ibnat labun. On sheep: from forty — one sheep, up to one hundred and twenty; when they exceed that — two sheep, up to two hundred; when they exceed that — three sheep, up to three hundred; when they further exceed that, nothing is due until they reach four hundred. When sheep become [very] numerous: for every hundred — one sheep. Likewise, jointly-held [assets] must not be separated nor separate [assets] combined [to reduce the zakah assessment]. If [livestock] belongs to two partners, they adjust proportionally between themselves. No aged or defective [sheep] shall be taken [as zakah].'
