Hadith #179

English Translation

It was narrated — via Yazid, from Sa'id ibn Ziyad al-Shaybani, from Ziyad ibn Subayh al-Hanafi — that he said: 'I was standing in prayer facing the House, with an old man beside me. I prolonged the prayer and placed my hands on my hips [al-salb]. The old man struck my chest with his hand with full force. I said to myself: What bothered him about me? I quickly finished the prayer. Behind him sat a young man, and I asked: Who is this old man? He said: This is 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar. I sat until he finished, then said: O Abu 'Abd al-Rahman, what bothered you about me? He said: Is that you? I said: Yes. He said: That is al-salb [placing hands on hips] in prayer — and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to forbid it.'
