Hadith #249
Arabic Text
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ أَخْبَرَنَا مَعْمَرٌ عَنْ أَيّ
ُوبَ عَنْ نَافِعٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَثَلُ الْقُرْآنِ إِذَا عَاهَدَ عَلَيْهِ صَاحِبُهُ فَقَرَأَهُ بِاللَّيْلِ وَالنَّهَارِ كَمَثَلِ رَجُلٍ لَهُ إِبِلٌ فَإِنْ عَقَلَهَا حَفِظَهَا وَإِنْ أَطْلَقَ عُقُلَهَا ذَهَبَتْ فَكَذَلِكَ صَاحِبُ الْقُرْآنِ

English Translation
It was narrated from Ibn 'Umar (رضي الله عنهما) — via 'Abd al-Razzaq, from Ma'mar, from Ayyub, from Nafi' — that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'The example of the one who is committed to the Quran — reading it by night and by day — is like a man who owns camels: if he tethers them, he keeps them; but if he releases their tethers, they go away. And so it is with the person of the Quran.'
