English Translation

It was narrated from Ibn 'Umar (رضي الله عنهما) — via Yazid, from 'Abd al-Malik, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr — that he said: 'I asked Ibn 'Umar: "O Abu 'Abd al-Rahman, are the two parties who have undergone li'an [mutual imprecation] to be separated?" He said: "SubhanAllah — yes! The first to ask about this was so-and-so, who said: \"O Messenger of Allah, what if one of us sees his wife committing indecency — what should he do? If he remains silent, he remains silent about a grave matter; and if he speaks, it is like that.\" the Messenger of Allah ﷺ remained silent and gave no answer; the man left. Later he returned to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: \"That which I asked you about has now befallen me.\" Allah (تعالى) then revealed these verses in Surah al-Nur: \"And those who accuse their wives...\" until the end of the verses. He called the man, recited them to him, reminded him of Allah (تعالى), and told him that the punishment of this world is lighter than the punishment of the Hereafter. The man said: \"By the One who sent you with the truth, I have not lied about her.\" Then he called the woman, admonished her, reminded her, and told her that the punishment of this world is lighter than the punishment of the Hereafter. She said: \"By the One who sent you with the truth, he is lying.\" He then called the man, who testified four times by Allah that he was truthful, and a fifth time that the curse of Allah be upon him if he were among the liars. Then he called the woman, who testified four times by Allah that he was among the liars, and a fifth time that the wrath of Allah be upon her if he were among the truthful. Then he separated them."'
