حَدَّثَنَا بَهْزٌ حَدَّثَنَا شُع

ْبَةُ حَدَّثَنَا جَبَلَةُ قَالَ كُنَّا بِالْمَدِينَةِ فِي بَعْثِ أَهْلِ الْعِرَاقِ فَأَصَابَتْنَا سَنَةٌ فَجَعَلَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ الزُّبَيْرِ يَرْزُقُنَا التَّمْرَ وَكَانَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ يَمُرُّ بِنَا فَيَقُولُ لَا تُقَارِنُوا فَإِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَهَى عَنْ الْقِرَانِ إِلَّا أَنْ يَسْتَأْمِرَ الرَّجُلُ مِنْكُمْ أَخَاهُ

English Translation

It was narrated — via Bahz, from Shu'ba, from Jabala — that he said: 'We were in Medina as part of an Iraqi contingent. A year of hardship struck us, and 'Abdullah ibn al-Zubayr began providing us with dates [as rations]. 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar used to pass by us and say: "Do not eat two dates at a time [al-qiran — eating two together in one bite] — for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade al-qiran, unless a man asks permission of his companion."'
