English Translation

It was narrated from Ibn 'Umar (رضي الله عنهما) — via Sulayman ibn Dawud, from Isma'il, from Muhammad ibn 'Amr ibn Halhal, from Muhammad ibn 'Amr ibn 'Ata' — that he was sitting with Ibn 'Umar in the market, with Salama ibn al-Azraq beside him, when a funeral procession passed followed by weeping. 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar said: 'If the family of this deceased would stop the weeping, it would be better for their dead.' Salama ibn al-Azraq said: 'Do you say that, O Abu 'Abd al-Rahman?' He said: 'Yes, I say it.' [Salama] said: 'I heard Abu Hurayra [narrate] — when one of Marwan's family died and the women gathered weeping over him, Marwan said: "Rise, O 'Abd al-Malik, and forbid them from weeping." Abu Hurayra said: "Leave them — for one of the Prophet ﷺ's (ﷺ) family died and the women gathered weeping over him. 'Umar ibn al-Khattab stood to forbid and drive them away. the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Leave them, O Ibn al-Khattab — for the eye tears and the heart is stricken, and the loss is recent.'"' Ibn 'Umar said: 'Did you hear this from Abu Hurayra?' He said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Tracing it back to the Prophet ﷺ?' He said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Then Allah and His Messenger know best.'
