حَدَّثَنَا حَسَنٌ حَدَّثَنَا زُهَيْرٌ عَنْ بَيَانٍ عَنْ وَبَرَةَ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ قَالَ خَرَجَ عَلَيْنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ وَنَحْنُ نَرْجُو أَنْ يُحَدِّثَنَا حَدِيثًا أَوْ حَدِيثًا حَس
َنًا فَبَدَرَنَا رَجُلٌ مِنَّا يُقَالُ لَهُ الْحَكَمُ فَقَالَ يَا أَبَا عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ مَا تَقُولُ فِي الْقِتَالِ فِي الْفِتْنَةِ قَالَ ثَكِلَتْكَ أُمُّكَ وَهَلْ تَدْرِي مَا الْفِتْنَةُ إِنَّ مُحَمَّدًا صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ يُقَاتِلُ الْمُشْرِكِينَ فَكَانَ الدُّخُولُ فِيهِمْ أَوْ فِي دِينِهِمْ فِتْنَةً وَلَيْسَ كَقِتَالِكُمْ عَلَى الْمُلْكِ

English Translation
It was narrated — via Hasan [ibn Musa], from Zuhayr, from Bayan, from Wabara, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr — that he said: ''Abdullah ibn 'Umar (رضي الله عنهما) came out to us and we were hoping he would narrate a hadith or something good. A man among us called al-Hakam rushed ahead and said: "O Abu 'Abd al-Rahman, what do you say about fighting in times of fitna [civil strife]?" He said: "May your mother grieve for you! Do you know what fitna is? Muhammad (ﷺ) used to fight the polytheists, and entering [the fight] on their side — or into their religion — was fitna. That is not like your fighting over kingship."'
