English Translation

It was narrated from 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar (رضي الله عنهما) — via Ya'qub, from his father, from Ibn Ishaq, from 'Umar ibn Husayn ibn 'Abdullah, freed slave of Al Hatib, from Nafi' — that 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar said: ''Uthman ibn Maz'un died and left a daughter by Khuwaylaِ bint Hakim ibn Umayya ibn Haritha ibn al-Awqas. He had entrusted her to his brother Qudama ibn Maz'un.' 'Abdullah said: 'Both of them were my maternal uncles. I went to Qudama ibn Maz'un to propose for the daughter of 'Uthman ibn Maz'un, and he gave her in marriage to me. Then al-Mughira ibn Shu'ba went to her mother and offered her wealth, so she inclined toward him, and the girl inclined toward her mother's wish. They refused [to accept the marriage], until the matter was brought to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Qudama ibn Maz'un said: "O Messenger of Allah, she is the daughter of my brother who entrusted her to me. I gave her in marriage to her cousin 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar — I did not fall short in terms of righteousness or compatibility. But she is a woman and she inclined toward her mother's wish." the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "She is an orphan and cannot be married without her consent." So, by Allah, she was taken from me after I had already married her, and they gave her in marriage to al-Mughira ibn Shu'ba.'
