English Translation

It was narrated from 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar (رضي الله عنهما) — via Hajjaj, from Layth, from 'Uqayl, from Ibn Shihab, from Salim ibn 'Abdullah — that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to give a special bonus [nafal] to some of those he sent out in raiding parties [saraya], for themselves exclusively, beyond the share of the main army. And the one-fifth [khums] was obligatory in that [from the total spoils] for Allah (تعالى).
