حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ عَنْ حَبِيبٍ عَنْ طَاوُسٍ قَالَ قَالَ رَجُلٌ لِابْنِ عُمَرَ إِنَّ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى عَنْهُ يَزْعُمُ أَنَّ الْوَ

تْرَ لَيْسَ بِحَتْمٍ قَالَ سَأَلَ رَجُلٌ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْ صَلَاةِ اللَّيْلِ فَقَالَ صَلَاةُ اللَّيْلِ مَثْنَى مَثْنَى فَإِذَا خِفْتَ الصُّبْحَ فَأَوْتِرْ بِوَاحِدَةٍ

English Translation

It was narrated from Ibn 'Umar (رضي الله عنهما) — via Jarir, from Mansur, from Habib, from Tawus — that a man said to Ibn 'Umar: 'Abu Hurayra (رضي الله عنه) claims that the witr is not obligatory [hatm].' He said: 'A man asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about the night prayer. He said: "The night prayer is two rak'as at a time [mathna mathna]. When you fear the morning, make it odd with one rak'a."'
