English Translation

It was narrated from Ibn 'Umar (رضي الله عنهما) — via Marwan ibn Mu'awiya, from 'Umar ibn Hamza al-'Umari, from Salim ibn 'Abdullah — that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Whoever of you is able to be like the owner of the faraq of rice, let him be like him.' They asked: 'O Messenger of Allah, who is the owner of the faraq of rice?' He said: 'Three men set out and clouds gathered over them, so they took shelter in a cave. A boulder came from the top of the mountain and blocked the entrance over them. They tried to shift it but could not. Some said to the others: "You have fallen into a grave matter — let each man call upon [Allah] through the best deed he has done, so that Allah (تعالى) may save us from this." One of them said: "O Allah, You know that I had two elderly parents. I used to milk [animals] and bring it to them, but when I arrived they were asleep. I would stand all night with their drink in my hands, unwilling to serve anyone before them or to wake them, while my small children cried around me. If You know that I did this only out of fear of You — relieve us." The boulder moved. The second said: "O Allah, You know I had a female cousin whom I loved more than anything You created. I sought her for herself and she refused unless I gave her a hundred dinars. I gathered them and brought them to her. When I sat with her in the man's position, she said: 'Fear Allah and do not break the seal except by its right.' So I got up and left her. If You know that I did this only out of fear of You — relieve us." The boulder moved until the sky was visible. The third said: "O Allah, You know I hired a worker for a faraq of rice. When evening came I presented his due to him but he refused to take it and left. I scrupulously invested it for him until I bought cattle and their shepherd from it. Later he met me and said: 'Fear Allah and give me my wage — do not wrong me.' I said: 'Go to those cattle and their shepherd and take them.' He said: 'Fear Allah and do not mock me.' I said: 'I am not mocking you.' So he went and drove them off. If You know that I did this seeking Your pleasure and out of fear of You — relieve us." The boulder rolled away and they walked out.' — [Second chain via Ya'qub, from his father, from Salih, from Nafi', from Ibn 'Umar, from the Prophet ﷺ: 'While three men were walking together, rain came upon them and they took shelter in a cave in a mountain. A boulder fell from the mountain and sealed them in' — with the same meaning.]
