English Translation

It was narrated from Ibn 'Umar (رضي الله عنهما) — via 'Abd al-Samad, from his father, from 'Abd al-'Aziz ibn Suhayb, from 'Abd al-Wahid al-Bunani — that he said: 'I was with Ibn 'Umar when a man came and said: "O Abu 'Abd al-Rahman, I purchase orchards that contain grapevines — and we cannot sell all the grapes before pressing them." He said: "You are asking me about the price of wine — I will tell you a hadith I heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. We were sitting with the Prophet ﷺ when he raised his head toward the sky, then bowed and tapped the ground and said: "Woe to the Children of Israel!" 'Umar said: "O Prophet of Allah, your saying 'woe to the Children of Israel' has alarmed us." He said: "There is nothing for you to fear from that. When fat [suet] was forbidden to them, they conspired together to sell it and eat its price. And likewise the price of wine is forbidden [haram] for you.""'
