English Translation

It was narrated from 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr (رضي الله عنهما) — via Waki' and Yazid, from al-Mas'udi, from 'Amr ibn Murra, from 'Abdullah ibn al-Harith al-Muktib, from Abu Kathir al-Zubaydi — that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Beware of miserliness [al-shuhh] — for it destroyed those before you: it commanded them to oppress and they oppressed, it commanded them to sever [ties] and they severed, it commanded them to act wickedly and they acted wickedly. And beware of oppression — for oppression is darknesses on the Day of Resurrection. And beware of obscenity — for Allah does not love obscenity or deliberate obscenity.' A man rose and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, which of the Muslims is best?' He said: 'Whoever the Muslims are safe from his tongue and his hand.' He [or another man] rose and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, which jihad is best?' He said: 'Whoever has his horse hamstrung and his blood shed [in battle].' Yazid ibn Harun added in his version: Then another man called out: 'O Messenger of Allah, which hijra is best?' He said: 'That you abandon what your Lord dislikes. And there are two hijras: the hijra of the desert-dweller and the hijra of the town-dweller. As for the hijra of the desert-dweller — he obeys when commanded and responds when called. As for the hijra of the town-dweller — it is the harder of the two trials and the greater in reward.'
