English Translation

It was narrated from 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr (رضي الله عنهما) — via Waki', from al-A'mash, from Zayd ibn Wahb, from 'Abd al-Rahman ibn 'Abd Rabb al-Ka'ba — that he said: 'I was sitting with him [i.e., 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr] in the shade of the Ka'ba while he was narrating to the people. He said: "We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a journey and halted at a stopping place. Some of us were setting up their tents, some were tending their grazing animals, and some were competing in archery — when the herald of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called out: Come together for prayer! I came to him and he was giving a sermon saying: 'O people! There was no prophet before me except that it was his duty to guide his ummah toward what he knew was good for them, and to warn them of what he knew was evil for them. Know that the soundness of this ummah is in its early period — and the later generations will be struck by tribulations and fitnas, each making the previous seem mild. A fitna comes and the believer says: This will destroy me. Then it passes. Then another comes and he says: This is it! This is it! Then it passes. Whoever wishes to be kept away from the Fire and to enter Paradise — let death find him while he believes in Allah and the Last Day, and while he treats people the way he wishes to be treated. And whoever gives allegiance to an imam — offering him the handshake of his hand and the fruit of his heart — let him obey him as much as he is able.'" When I heard that, I pushed my head between two men and said: "And what about your cousin Mu'awiya — he commands us?" He placed his fist on his forehead, bowed his head, then raised it and said: "Obey him in obedience to Allah and disobey him in disobedience to Allah." I said to him: "Did you hear this from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?" He said: "Yes — my two ears heard it and my heart retained it."' [Also narrated via Isma'il ibn 'Umar Abu al-Mundhir, from Yunus ibn Abi Ishaq, from 'Abdullah ibn Abi al-Safar, from al-Sha'bi, from 'Abd al-Rahman ibn 'Abd Rabb al-Ka'ba al-Sa'idi: 'I saw a group at the Ka'ba and sat with them. A man was narrating to them — and it was 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr. He said: We went out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a journey and halted at a halt...' — and he mentioned the hadith.]
