حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ حَدَّثَنَا سَلِيمٌ يَعْنِي ابْنَ حَيَّانَ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ مِينَاءَ سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عَمْرٍو قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بَلَغَنِي أَنَّكَ قَالَ أَبِي و حَدَّثَنَاه عَفَّانُ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا سَلِيمُ بْنُ حَيَّانَ حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ مِينَاءَ سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عَمْرٍو قَالَ قَالَ لِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بَلَغَنِي أَنَّكَ تَصُومُ النَّهَارَ وَتَقُومُ اللَّيْلَ فَ
لَا تَفْعَلْ فَإِنَّ لِجَسَدِكَ عَلَيْكَ حَظًّا وَلِعَيْنِكَ عَلَيْكَ حَظًّا وَلِزَوْجِكَ عَلَيْكَ حَظًّا صُمْ ثَلَاثَةَ أَيَّامٍ مِنْ كُلِّ شَهْرٍ فَذَلِكَ صَوْمُ الدَّهْرِ قَالَ قُلْتُ إِنَّ بِي قُوَّةً قَالَ صُمْ صَوْمَ دَاوُدَ صُمْ يَوْمًا وَأَفْطِرْ يَوْمًا قَالَ فَكَانَ ابْنُ عَمْرٍو يَقُولُ يَا لَيْتَنِي كُنْتُ أَخَذْتُ بِالرُّخْصَةِ و قَالَ عَفَّانُ وَبَهْزٌ إِنِّي أَجِدُ بِي قُوَّةً

English Translation
It was narrated from 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr (رضي الله عنهما) — via 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi, from Salim ibn Hayyan, from Sa'id ibn Mina' — who said: 'I heard 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr [say]: "the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me: 'It has reached me that you fast all day and pray all night. Do not do that — for your body has a right over you, your eyes have a right over you, and your wife has a right over you. Fast three days of every month — for that is [the reward of] fasting the entire year.' I said: 'I have the strength for more.' He said: 'Then fast the fast of Dawud — fast one day and break fast one day.'" And Ibn 'Amr used to say: 'Would that I had taken the concession [he offered].' 'Affan and Bahz said in their version: 'I find that I have the strength.'
