English Translation
It was narrated from 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr (رضي الله عنهما) — via 'Abd al-Wahhab ibn 'Ata', from Muhammad ibn 'Amr, from Abu Salama — that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered his house and said: 'O 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr — have I not been informed that you exert yourself in praying all night and fasting all day?' He said: 'I indeed do that.' He said: 'Sufficient for you — and I do not say: do it — is to fast three days of every month. A good deed is rewarded tenfold — so it is as though you have fasted the entire year.' He said: 'But I pressed [for more] and more was imposed on me.' He said: 'I said: I find I have the strength for more than that.' He said: 'Then what is sufficient for you is to fast three days of every week.' He said: 'I pressed [again] and more was imposed on me.' He said: 'I find in myself strength [for more].' the Prophet ﷺ said: 'The most balanced fast before Allah is the fast of Dawud — half the year.' Then he said: 'Your soul has a right over you, and your family has a right over you.' 'Abdullah continued observing that fast until old age and weakness overcame him. He used to say: 'Would that I had accepted the concession of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ — it would have been more beloved to me than my family and my wealth.'
