English Translation
It was narrated from 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr (رضي الله عنهما) — via Surayj ibn al-Nu'man, from Ibn Abi al-Zinad, from 'Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Harith, from 'Amr ibn Shu'ayb, from his father, from his grandfather — that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw a Bedouin standing in the sun while he was giving a sermon. He said: 'What is the matter with you?' He said: 'I vowed, O Messenger of Allah, that I would remain standing in the sun until you finish.' the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'This is not a [valid] vow. A vow is only what is sought by it [the seeking of] the countenance of Allah (عز وجل).'
