ِ عَمْرٍو أَنَّ الْيَهُودَ أَتَتْ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَتْ السَّامُ عَلَيْكَ وَقَالُوا فِي أَنْفُسِهِمْ { لَوْلَا يُعَذِّبُنَا اللَّهُ بِمَا نَقُولُ } فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ { وَإِذَا جَاءُوكَ حَيَّوْكَ بِمَا لَمْ يُحَيِّكَ بِهِ اللَّهُ فَقَرَأَ إِلَى قَوْلِهِ فَبِئْسَ الْمَصِيرُ }

English Translation
It was narrated from 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr (رضي الله عنهما) — via 'Affan, from Hammad [ibn Salama], from 'Ata' ibn al-Sa'ib, from his father — that some Jews came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: 'Al-sam 'alayk [death be upon you].' And they said among themselves: {Why does Allah not punish us for what we say?} [58:8]. So Allah (عز وجل) revealed: {When they come to you, they greet you with a greeting that Allah has not used to greet you} — and he recited until: {...and what a wretched destination} [58:8].
