English Translation
It was narrated from 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr (رضي الله عنهما) — via Qutayba ibn Sa'id, from Bakr ibn Mudar, from Ibn al-Had, from 'Amr ibn Shu'ayb, from his father, from his grandfather — that in the year of the Expedition of Tabuk, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ rose at night to pray. A group of his Companions gathered behind him to guard him. When he had prayed and turned toward them, he said to them: 'Tonight I have been given five things that no one before me has been given. As for me — I have been sent to all of mankind universally, whereas those before me were sent only to their own people. I have been aided against the enemy with terror [al-ru'b], even if there were a month's journey between me and them — it would be filled with terror [of me]. The spoils of war have been made lawful for me to use, whereas those before me considered it a grave matter — they would burn them. The earth has been made for me a place of prostration and a means of purification — wherever prayer overtakes me, I perform tayammum and pray; whereas those before me considered this a great thing — they would only pray in their churches and synagogues. And the fifth — it is what it is. I was told: "Ask — for every prophet has asked." So I have deferred my request until the Day of Resurrection, and it is for you and for all who bear witness that there is no god but Allah.'
