English Translation
It was narrated from Abu Hurayra (رضي الله عنه) — via Sufyan, from al-Zuhri, from Humayd ibn 'Abd al-Rahman — that Abu Hurayra said: 'A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: "I am ruined!" He said: "What has ruined you?" He said: "I had intercourse with my wife [during the day] in Ramadan." He said: "Can you free a slave?" He said: "No." He said: "Can you fast two consecutive months?" He said: "No." He said: "Can you feed sixty poor people?" He said: "No." He said: "Sit down." Then the Prophet ﷺ was brought a large basket [araq — a large deep basket] filled with dates. He said: "Give this in charity." He said: "To someone poorer than us? There is no one between its two lava fields [Medina's boundaries] poorer than us!" the Messenger of Allah ﷺ laughed' — and on another occasion [it was narrated] 'smiled until his canine teeth showed' — 'and said: "Feed it to your household" — or: "your dependents."'
