English Translation
It was narrated from Abu Hurayra (رضي الله عنه) — via Sufyan, from Ibn Muhaysin — a Qurashi elder of the Sahm clan who heard it from Muhammad ibn Qays ibn Makhrama — that Abu Hurayra said: 'When the verse {Whoever does evil will be recompensed for it} [4:123] was revealed, it weighed heavily upon the Muslims and affected them as much as Allah willed. They complained to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said: "Draw close [to what is good], be upright [saddidu] — for every affliction that befalls a Muslim is an expiation [kaffara] — even a stumble [nakba] he suffers."'
