English Translation

It was narrated from Abu Hurayra (رضي الله عنه) — via Ibn Abi 'Adiyy, from Shu'ba, from al-'Ala', from his father; and via Muhammad ibn Ja'far, from Shu'ba — that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'When two people exchange insults [al-mustabian], whatever is said falls on the one who started it — as long as the wronged party does not go beyond [in retaliation].'
