حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي عَدِيٍّ عَنِ ابْنِ إِسْحَاقَ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَلَا أُنَبِّئُكُمْ بِخَيْرِكُمْ قَالُوا نَعَمْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ خِيَا
رُكُمْ أَطْوَلُكُمْ أَعْمَارًا وَأَحْسَنُكُمْ أَعْمَالًا قَالَ أَبُو عَبْد الرَّحْمَنِ سَأَلْتُ أَبِي عَنْ الْعَلَاءِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ عَنْ أَبِيهِ وَسُهيْلٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ فَقَالَ لَمْ أَسْمَعْ أَحَدًا ذَكَرَ الْعَلَاءَ إِلَّا بِخَيْرٍ وَقَدَّمَ أَبَا صَالِحٍ عَلَى الْعَلَاءِ

English Translation
It was narrated from Abu Hurayra (رضي الله عنه) — via Ibn Abi 'Adiyy, from Ibn Ishaq, from Muhammad ibn Ibrahim, from Abu Salama — that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Shall I not tell you who is best among you?' They said: 'Yes, O Messenger of Allah.' He said: 'The best of you are those who live longest with the best deeds.' [Abu 'Abd al-Rahman (Ahmad's son 'Abdullah) added:] 'I asked my father about al-'Ala' ibn 'Abd al-Rahman transmitting from his father, and Suhayl transmitting from his father. He said: I have not heard anyone mention al-'Ala' except with good words — and he ranked Abu Salih [father of Suhayl] above al-'Ala'.'
