English Translation
Sulayman ibn Dawud narrated to us who (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that isma'il, meaning Ibn Ja'far, narrated to us who said: Al-'Ala' informed me, from his father, from Abu Hurayrah (رضي الله عنه) that a man came to the Prophet ﷺ. the Prophet ﷺ sent word to his wives asking if they had anything. They said: 'We have nothing except water.' the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Who will host this man?' A man from the Ansar said: 'I will.' So he took him to his wife and said: 'Honor the guest of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' She said: 'We have nothing except the children's food.' He said: 'Put the children to sleep, extinguish the lamp, and show him that we are eating.' They sat down and the guest ate, and they went hungry. In the morning, the Prophet ﷺ said: 'Allah was amazed — or laughed — at what you two did last night.'
