English Translation
Muhammad ibn Mus'ab narrated to us, Malik ibn Anas narrated to us, from al-Zuhri, from Sa'id ibn al-Musayyab, from Abu Hurayrah (رضي الله عنه), that a man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: 'I am ruined, O Messenger of Allah.' He said: 'What has ruined you?' He said: 'I had relations with my wife during Ramadan [while fasting].' He said: 'Can you free a slave?' He said: 'No.' He said: 'Can you fast two consecutive months?' He said: 'No.' He said: 'Can you feed sixty poor people?' He said: 'No.' Then a large basket of dates was brought to the Prophet ﷺ. He said: 'Take this and give it in charity.' The man said: 'To someone poorer than us? There is no household between the two lava fields [i.e., in all of Madinah] more in need of it than us.' the Prophet ﷺ laughed until his premolars appeared and said: 'Go and feed your family.'
