English Translation

Yahya ibn Sa'id narrated to us, he said: Sulayman ibn al-Mughirah narrated to us, he said: Humayd ibn Hilal narrated to us from Abu Rafi', from Abu Hurayrah (رضي الله عنه) who said: Jurayj used to worship in his hermitage. His mother came to him and said: "O Jurayj, I am your mother, speak to me." Abu Hurayrah described it as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ described it, placing his hand above his right eyebrow. She found him praying, so he said: "O Lord, my mother and my prayer" — and he chose his prayer. She returned and came again, finding him praying. She said: "O Jurayj, I am your mother, speak to me." He said: "O Lord, my mother and my prayer" — and he chose his prayer. She came a third time, finding him praying. She said: "O Jurayj, I am your mother, speak to me." He said: "O Lord, my mother and my prayer" — and he chose his prayer. She said: "O Allah, this is Jurayj, he is my son. I spoke to him and he refused to speak to me. O Allah, do not let him die until You show him the faces of prostitutes." Had she supplicated against him to be tempted, he would have been tempted. There was a shepherd who used to shelter near his hermitage. A woman came out and the shepherd lay with her, and she bore a boy. It was asked: "Whose is this?" She said: "He is from the occupant of the hermitage." They came with their axes and pickaxes to the hermitage and called out to him. He did not speak to them, so they began destroying his hermitage. He came down to them, and they said: "Ask this woman." He seemed to smile, then stroked the head of the boy and said: "Who is your father?" The child said: "The shepherd of the sheep." They said: "O Jurayj, we will rebuild what we destroyed of your hermitage in gold and silver." He said: "No, rather restore it to mud as it was." And they did. Abu Sa'id, freed slave of Banu Hashim, also narrated from Abu 'Awanah, from 'Umar ibn Abi Salamah, from his father, from Abu Hurayrah that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "There was a man among the Children of Israel who was a merchant..." and he mentioned a similar narration.
