English Translation
'Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us, Sufyan informed us, from his father, from Ibn Abi Nu'm, from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (رضي الله عنه) who said: 'Ali (رضي الله عنه) sent — while he was in Yemen — a piece of gold still in its ore, wrapped in tanned leather, to the Prophet ﷺ. the Prophet ﷺ divided it among four people: al-Aqra' ibn Habis al-Hanzali, 'Uyaynah ibn Badr al-Fazari, 'Alqamah ibn 'Ulathah al-'Amiri, and Zayd al-Khayr al-Ta'i — then one of Banu Nabhan. The Quraysh and the Ansar became angry and said: 'He gives the chiefs of Najd and leaves us!' He said: 'I am only trying to win their hearts.' Then a man with sunken eyes, protruding cheekbones, prominent forehead, thick beard, and shaved head came and said: 'Fear Allah, O Muhammad!' He said: 'Who will obey Allah if I disobey Him? He entrusts me with the people of the earth, and you do not trust me?' Then the man turned away, and a man from the people — they claimed it was Khalid ibn al-Walid — asked permission to kill him. the Prophet ﷺ said: 'From the descendants of this man will emerge a people who recite the Quran but it does not go beyond their throats. They pass through Islam as an arrow passes through game. They kill the people of Islam and leave the people of idols. If I were to reach them, I would kill them the way 'Ad was killed.'
