English Translation

'Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us, Sufyan informed us, from his father, from Ibn Abi Nu'm, from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (رضي الله عنه) who said: 'Ali (رضي الله عنه) sent to the Prophet ﷺ — while he was in Yemen — a piece of gold in its ore, and the Prophet ﷺ divided it among four people. A man said: We were more deserving of this than them. This reached the Prophet ﷺ and he said: Will you not trust me when I am the trustee of the One Who is above the heavens? Revelation comes to me from the heavens morning and evening. Then a man with sunken eyes, prominent cheekbones, and shaved head stood up and said: Fear Allah, O Messenger of Allah! He said: Woe to you! Am I not the most deserving person on earth to fear Allah? Then the man turned away. Khalid ibn al-Walid said: O Messenger of Allah, shall I strike his neck? He said: Perhaps he prays. Khalid said: How many people pray and say with their tongues what is not in their hearts! the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: I was not commanded to probe people's hearts nor to split open their chests.
