Hadith #317

English Translation

Anas (رضي الله عنه) narrated: A son of Abu Talhah from Umm Sulaym died. She said to her family: "Do not tell Abu Talhah about his son until I tell him." Abu Talhah came and she brought him dinner, and he ate and drank. Then she adorned herself the best she had ever adorned herself, and he was intimate with her. When she saw that he was satisfied, she said: "O Abu Talhah, do you think that if some people lent something to a household and then asked for it back, should they refuse to return it?" He said: "No." She said: "Then bear your son's death with patience, seeking reward." He became angry and said: "You let me be intimate with you and then inform me of my son's death!" He went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and told him what had happened. He said: "May Allah bless your night." She became pregnant. the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was on a journey and she was with him. When the Prophet ﷺ would come near Madinah from a journey, he would not enter it at night. When the group drew near Madinah, she went into labor. Abu Talhah stayed with her. the Messenger of Allah ﷺ proceeded ahead. Abu Talhah said: "O Lord, You know that I love to go out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when he goes out and to enter with him when he enters, and I have been detained as You see." Umm Sulaym said: "O Abu Talhah, I do not feel the pain I used to feel. Let us continue." They went, and when they arrived she went into labor and gave birth to a boy. My mother said to me: "O Anas, no one should nurse him until you take him to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the morning." In the morning I took him to the Prophet ﷺ, and he chewed a date and rubbed it in the baby's mouth and named him 'Abdullah.
