Hadith #569
Arabic Text
حَدَّثَنَا رَوْحٌ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامُ بْنُ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَنَسَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ يُحَدِّثُ أَنَّ يَهُودِيًّا مَرَّ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ
السَّامُ عَلَيْكَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَعَلَيْكَ أَتَدْرُونَ مَا قَالَ قَالَ السَّامُ عَلَيْكُمْ فَقَالُوا أَلَا نَقْتُلُهُ فَقَالَ لَا وَلَكِنْ إِذَا سَلَّمَ عَلَيْكُمْ أَهْلُ الْكِتَابِ فَقُولُوا وَعَلَيْكُمْ
Isnad Chain
English Translation
Rawh narrated to us, he said Shu'bah narrated to us, he said Hisham ibn Zayd ibn Anas ibn Malik narrated to us, he said I heard Anas ibn Malik (رضي الله عنه) narrating that a Jew passed by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, 'As-Samu alaykum (death be upon you).' the Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, 'Wa alaykum (and upon you).' Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to his Companions, 'Do you know what he said? He said: as-Samu alaykum.' They said, 'O Messenger of Allah, shall we not kill him?' He said, 'No. When the People of the Book greet you with salam, say: wa alaykum.'
