English Translation
'Affan narrated to us, Sa'id ibn Zayd narrated to us, al-Zubayr ibn al-Khirrit narrated to me, from Abu Labid who said: 'The horses were sent out during the time of al-Hajjaj, and al-Hakam ibn Ayyub was the governor of al-Basrah. We set out and came to Anas ibn Malik (رضي الله عنه), and he narrated to us that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Do not be harsh with yourselves, for a people were harsh with themselves and Allah was harsh with them. Those are their remnants in the monasteries and hermitages. They innovated monasticism — We did not prescribe it for them.'
