Isma'il ibn Muhammad — Abu Ibrahim al-Mu'aqqib — narrated to us, 'Abbad ibn 'Abbad narrated to us, from Mujalid, from al-Sha'bi, from Jabir (رضي الله عنه), who said: "the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'A freed slave with no designated patron (sa'ibah)...'" — and Khalaf ibn al-Walid said in another narration: "'A freed slave whose right of patronage belongs to whoever freed him. This applies even if the freed person does not wish it.'"
