English Translation

Azhar ibn al-Qasim al-Rasibi narrated to us, Zakariyya ibn Ishaq narrated to us, from al-Walid ibn 'Abdullah ibn Shumaylah, from Abu Tarif who said: 'I was with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when he besieged al-Ta'if. He would pray with us two prayers combined. He said: "When the people of al-Ta'if see the army of Allah camped upon them, they will submit." But they did not come out, so he departed. It was said: O Messenger of Allah, we have not conquered. He said: "We shall attack them tomorrow, if Allah wills." The people were pleased. The next morning the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "We are returning, if Allah wills." They were saddened. He ﷺ said: "Make the expedition, for it is better."'
