حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ خُبَيْبِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ عَنْ حَفْصِ بْنِ عَاصِمٍ عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْمُعَلَّى قَالَ كُنْتُ أُصَلِّي فَمَرَّ بِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَدَعَانِي فَلَمْ آتِهِ حَتَّى صَلَّيْتُ ثُمَّ أَتَيْتُهُ فَقَالَ مَا مَنَعَكَ أَنْ تَأْتِيَنِي فَقَالَ إِنِّي كُنْتُ أُصَلِّي قَالَ أَلَمْ يَقُلْ اللَّهُ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى { يَا
أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اسْتَجِيبُوا لِلَّهِ وَلِلرَّسُولِ إِذَا دَعَاكُمْ لِمَا يُحْيِيكُمْ } ثُمَّ قَالَ أَلَا أُعَلِّمُكُمْ أَعْظَمَ سُورَةٍ فِي الْقُرْآنِ قَبْلَ أَنْ أَخْرُجَ مِنْ الْمَسْجِدِ قَالَ فَذَهَبَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لِيَخْرُجَ فَذَكَّرْتُهُ فَقَالَ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ هِيَ السَّبْعُ الْمَثَانِي وَالْقُرْآنُ الْعَظِيمُ الَّذِي أُوتِيتُهُ

English Translation
Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar narrated to us: Shuʿbah narrated to us, from Khubayb ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, from Ḥafṣ ibn ʿĀṣim, from Abū Saʿīd ibn al-Muʿallā (رضي الله عنه) who said: I was praying when the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ passed by and called me, but I did not come to him until I finished my prayer. Then I came to him and he ﷺ said: 'What prevented you from coming to me?' I said: 'I was praying.' He ﷺ said: 'Did not Allāh say: {O you who believe, respond to Allāh and to the Messenger when he calls you}?' Then he said: 'Shall I not teach you the greatest surah in the Quran before you leave the mosque?' He took my hand, and when we were about to leave, I said: 'O Messenger of Allāh, you said you would teach me the greatest surah.' He ﷺ said: '{All praise is due to Allāh, Lord of the worlds} — it is the seven oft-repeated verses and the Magnificent Quran that I was given.'
