حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْيَمَانِ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا شُعَيْبٌ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ كَعْبِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ أَنَّ كَعْبَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ حِينَ أَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى فِي الشِّعْرِ مَا أَنْز
َلَ أَتَى النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى قَدْ أَنْزَلَ فِي الشِّعْرِ مَا قَدْ عَلِمْتَ وَكَيْفَ تَرَى فِيهِ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنَّ الْمُؤْمِنَ يُجَاهِدُ بِسَيْفِهِ وَلِسَانِهِ

English Translation
Abū al-Yamān narrated to us, he said: Shuʿayb informed us, from al-Zuhrī, who said: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAbdillāh ibn Kaʿb ibn Mālik narrated to me that Kaʿb ibn Mālik — when Allāh تبارك وتعالى revealed about poetry what He revealed — came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: 'Allāh تبارك وتعالى has revealed about poetry what He revealed, and you know that a poet — there is poetry — ' He said: 'Indeed, the believer strives with his sword and his tongue. By the One in Whose hand is my soul, it is as though what you shoot at them are arrows.'
