English Translation

ʿAbdullāh narrated to us, he said: Abū Mūsā al-ʿAnazī Muḥammad ibn al-Muthannā narrated to me, he said: Muḥammad ibn Abī ʿAdī narrated to us, from Ibn ʿAwn, from Kulthūm ibn Jabr, who said: We were at Wāsiṭ al-Qaṣab with ʿAbd al-Aʿlā ibn ʿAbdillāh ibn ʿĀmir, and there was a man called Abū al-Ghādiyah. He asked for water to drink, and he was brought a silver-plated vessel, He refused to drink from it and mentioned the Prophet ﷺ, then narrated this ḥadīth: 'Do not revert after me as disbelievers' — or 'as misguided ones' (Ibn Abī ʿAdī was uncertain) — 'striking one another's necks.' Then there was a man insulting so-and-so. I said, 'By Allāh, if Allāh enables me to get to you in a military unit...' Then on the Day of Ṣiffīn, there he was wearing armor. I noticed the gap at the collar of the armor, so I thrust at him and killed him. And it turned out to be ʿAmmār ibn Yāsir. He said: I said, 'What hands these were!' — he refuses to drink from a silver-plated vessel, yet he killed ʿAmmār ibn Yāsir.
