ʿAbdullāh ibn Muḥammad narrated to us — Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ʿAbdullāh ibn Aḥmad said: and I heard it from ʿAbdullāh ibn Muḥammad — from ʿAbdullāh ibn Idrīs, from Ḥuṣayn, from ʿAmr ibn Murrah, from ʿAbbād ibn ʿĀṣim, from Nāfiʿ ibn Jubayr ibn Muṭʿim, from his father, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ when he opened the prayer say: 'Allāhu akbar kabīrā' — three times — 'al-ḥamdu lillāhi kathīrā' — three times — 'subḥān Allāhi bukratan wa aṣīlā' — three times — 'O Allāh, I seek refuge in You from Shayṭān, from his hamz, his nafth, and his nafkh.' Ḥuṣayn said: His hamz is the seizure that afflicts the one touched (by jinn), his nafth is (evil) poetry, and his nafkh is arrogance.
