English Translation

Dhū Mikhmar — who was a man from Abyssinia who served the Prophet ﷺ — narrated: We were with him on a journey and he hastened the pace when departing, as he would do when provisions were scarce. Someone said: 'O Messenger of Allāh, the people have fallen behind you.' So he halted and the people gathered to him. He said to them: 'Shall we rest a short while?' — or someone suggested it — so he dismounted and they dismounted. He said: 'Who will guard us tonight?' I said: 'I will, may Allāh make me your ransom.' He gave me the halter of his she-camel and said: 'Here, and do not be feeble.' So I took the halter of the Messenger of Allāh's ﷺ she-camel and mine, and I moved a short distance away and let them graze. While I was watching them, sleep overtook me and I did not feel anything until the heat of the sun fell on my face. I woke and looked right and left, and the two riding camels were not far from me. I took the halter of the Prophet ﷺ's ﷺ she-camel and mine, and went to the nearest of the people and woke him. I said: 'Have you prayed?' He said: 'No.' The people woke one another until the Prophet ﷺ woke. He said: 'O Bilāl, do I have water for ablution?' — meaning the water vessel. He said: 'Yes, may Allāh make me your ransom.' So he brought him water and he performed ablution without letting the water touch the ground. He ordered Bilāl to call the adhān, then the Prophet ﷺ stood and prayed the two rakʿahs before Fajr without haste. Then he ordered him to establish the prayer and he prayed without haste. Someone said: 'O Prophet of Allāh, we have missed it.' He said: 'No. Allāh عز وجل took our souls and has returned them to us, and we have prayed.'
