English Translation

Yaḥyā ibn Isḥāq narrated to us, he said: Ibn Lahīʿah narrated to us, from ʿAyyāsh ibn ʿAbbās, from Shiyaym ibn Baytān who said: Maslamah ibn Mukhallad was governor over Lower Egypt. He appointed Ruwayfiʿ ibn Thābit al-Anṣārī, and we marched with him from Sharīk to Kawm ʿAlqamah — or from Kawm ʿAlqamah to Sharīk. Ruwayfiʿ ibn Thābit said: "We used to go on expeditions during the time of the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ, and one of us would take his brother's camel on the condition that he would receive half of whatever was gained as spoils — to the extent that one of us would receive the arrow shaft while the other received the arrowhead and the fletching." Ruwayfiʿ ibn Thābit then said: "The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said to me: 'O Ruwayfiʿ, perhaps life will be long for you after me. So inform the people that whoever ties knots in his beard, or wears a bowstring amulet, or cleans himself after relieving himself with animal dung or bone, then Muḥammad ﷺ is free of him.'"
