English Translation

Muḥammad ibn Bakr narrated to us, ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd — meaning Ibn Jaʿfar — narrated to us, he said: al-Aswad ibn al-ʿAlāʾ narrated to me, from Ḥuwayy, the freedman of Sulaymān ibn ʿAbd al-Malik, from a man whom ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz sent for while he was Commander of the Faithful. He said: "What is the ḥadīth that al-Ṣunābiḥī narrated to you?" He said: "Al-Ṣunābiḥī informed me that he met ʿAmr ibn ʿAbasah, and he said: 'Do you have a ḥadīth from the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ with no addition or omission?' He said: 'Yes. I heard the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ saying: Whoever frees a slave, Allāh will free every limb of him for every limb of the slave from the Fire. Whoever shoots an arrow in the path of Allāh that reaches its target or falls short, it is the equivalent of freeing a slave. And whoever grows a grey hair in the path of Allāh, it will be a light for him on the Day of Resurrection.'"
