Hadith #575

English Translation

ʿAbd al-Razzāq narrated to us, he said: Maʿmar narrated to us, from Ayyūb, from Abū Qilābah, from ʿAmr ibn ʿAbasah who said: A man said: "O Messenger of Allāh, what is Islam?" He said: "That your heart submits to Allāh عز وجل, and that the Muslims are safe from your tongue and your hand." He said: "Which form of Islam is best?" He said: "Faith (īmān)." He said: "And what is faith?" He said: "That you believe in Allāh, His angels, His Books, His Messengers, and the resurrection after death." He said: "Which form of faith is best?" He said: "Emigration (hijrah)." He said: "And what is emigration?" He said: "That you abandon evil." He said: "Which form of emigration is best?" He said: "Jihād." He said: "And what is jihād?" He said: "That you fight the disbelievers when you encounter them." He said: "Which form of jihād is best?" He said: "The one whose mount is slain and whose blood is shed." The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: "Then two deeds which are the best of deeds — unless one performs their like — an accepted Ḥajj or an ʿUmrah."
