حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ وَابْنُ بَكْرٍ قَالَا أَنَا ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا سَعِيدٍ الْأَعْمَى يُخْبِرُ عَنْ رَجُلٍ يُقَالُ لَهُ السَّائِبُ مَوْلَى الْفَارِسِيِّينَ وَقَالَ ابْنُ بَكْرٍ مَوْلًى لِفَارِسَ وَقَالَ حَجَّاجٌ مَوْلَى الْفَارِسِيِّ عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ أَنَّهُ رَآهُ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ وَهُوَ خَلِيفَةٌ رَكَعَ بَعْدَ الْعَصْرِ رَكْعَتَيْنِ فَمَشَى إِلَي
ْهِ فَضَرَبَهُ بِالدِّرَّةِ وَهُوَ يُصَلِّي كَمَا هُوَ فَلَمَّا انْصَرَفَ قَالَ زَيْدٌ يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ فَوَاللَّهِ لَا أَدَعُهُمَا أَبَدًا بَعْدَ أَنْ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُصَلِّيهِمَا قَالَ فَجَلَسَ إِلَيْهِ عُمَرُ وَقَالَ يَا زَيْدُ بْنَ خَالِدٍ لَوْلَا أَنِّي أَخْشَى أَنْ يَتَّخِذَهَا النَّاسُ سُلَّمًا إِلَى الصَّلَاةِ حَتَّى اللَّيْلِ لَمْ أَضْرِبْ فِيهِمَا

English Translation
ʿAbd al-Razzāq and Ibn Bakr narrated to us, they said: Ibn Jurayj informed us, he said: I heard Abū Saʿīd al-Aʿmā reporting from a man called al-Sāʾib, the freedman of the Persians — Ibn Bakr said: a freedman of Persia, and Ḥajjāj said: the freedman of the Persian — from Zayd ibn Khālid: that ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb saw him while he was caliph praying two rakʿahs after ʿAṣr. He walked over and struck him with his whip while he was still praying. When he finished, Zayd said: "O Commander of the Faithful, by Allāh, I will never abandon those two rakʿahs after having seen the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ pray them." So ʿUmar sat down next to him and said: "O Zayd ibn Khālid, were it not that I fear people would take them as a ladder to pray until nightfall, I would not have struck you for them."
