English Translation
ʿAbd al-Razzāq narrated to us, he said: Ibn Jurayj informed us, from Ibn Shihāb, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAbdillāh ibn Kaʿb ibn Mālik al-Anṣārī informed me, that Salamah ibn al-Akwaʿ said: On the day of Khaybar, my brother fought fiercely alongside the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ, but his own sword recoiled and killed him. The Companions of the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ spoke about it and doubted concerning him — a man who died by his own weapon — they doubted some of his affair. Salamah said: When the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ returned from Khaybar, I said: O Messenger of Allāh, will you permit me to recite rajaz poetry for you? The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ gave him permission. ʿUmar said to him: Mind what you say. He said: So I recited: "By Allāh, were it not for Allāh we would not have been guided, nor given charity, nor prayed." The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: "You have spoken the truth." [Then continuing:] "So send down tranquility upon us, and make firm our feet if we meet [the enemy]. The polytheists have transgressed against us." When I finished my rajaz, the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: "Who said this?" I said: My brother composed it. The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: "May Allāh have mercy on him." I said: O Messenger of Allāh, by Allāh, some people are reluctant to pray over him and they say: A man who died by his own weapon. The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: "He died striving as a mujāhid." Ibn Shihāb said: Then I asked the son of Salamah ibn al-Akwaʿ, and he narrated to me from his father something similar to what ʿAbd al-Raḥmān narrated, except that the son of Salamah said: The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ also said: "They are reluctant to pray over him? They lied. He died striving as a mujāhid, and he has his reward twice," and the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ gestured with his two fingers.
