Hadith #79

English Translation

Makkī ibn Ibrāhīm narrated to me, he said: Yazīd ibn Abī ʿUbayd narrated to us, from Salamah ibn al-Akwaʿ, who informed him, saying: I left Madīnah heading toward al-Ghābah. When I reached the pass of al-Ghābah, a servant of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwf met me. I said: Woe to you, what is the matter? He said: The she-camels of the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ have been taken! I said: Who took them? He said: Ghaṭafān and Fazārah. He said: So I shouted three cries that were heard throughout the two lava plains: "O the morning raid! O the morning raid!" Then I rushed until I caught up with them after they had taken the camels. I began shooting arrows at them, saying: "I am Ibn al-Akwaʿ, and today is a day of destruction!" He said: I rescued them before they could water them, and I drove them back. The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ met me, and I said: O Messenger of Allāh, the people are thirsty and I overtook them before they could drink, so send after them. He said: "O Ibn al-Akwaʿ, you have gained mastery, so be gentle. The people are being hosted among their tribe."
