English Translation

ʿAbd al-Ṣamad narrated to us, he said: ʿIkrimah narrated to us, he said: Iyās narrated to us, he said: my father narrated to me, saying: We arrived with the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ at al-Ḥudaybiyyah, and we were fourteen hundred. There were fifty sheep at the well that could not quench them. The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ sat at the edge of the well, and either he supplicated or he spat into it, and it gushed forth. We drank and drew water. Then the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ called for the pledge at the base of the tree. I pledged to him first among the people. He continued taking pledges until, when he was in the middle of the people, he said: "O Salamah, pledge to me." I said: I already pledged to you first among the people, O Messenger of Allāh. He said: "And again." So I pledged. He saw I was unarmed and gave me a shield — or a buckler. Then he continued taking pledges until, when he was among the last of the people, he said: "Will you not pledge to me?" I said: O Messenger of Allāh, I have already pledged first, in the middle, and last. He said: "And again." So I pledged again. Then he said: "Where is the buckler — or shield — I gave you?" I said: O Messenger of Allāh, my uncle ʿĀmir met me unarmed, so I gave it to him. He said: "You are like the one who said: 'O Allāh, find me a beloved who is dearer to me than myself,'" and he laughed. Then the polytheists sent us peace proposals until we mixed with one another. I was a servant of Ṭalḥah ibn ʿUbaydillāh — I groomed his horse, watered it, and ate from his food, having left my family and wealth as an emigrant to Allāh and His Messenger. When we and the people of Makkah made peace and mixed with each other, I came to the tree, cleared its thorns, and lay down in its shade. Four men from the people of Makkah came to me, and they — being polytheists — began insulting the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ. So I moved away from them to another tree. They hung up their weapons and lay down. While they were thus, a caller cried from the bottom of the valley: "O Muhājirūn! Ibn Zunaym has been killed!" So I drew my sword and charged the four men, seized their weapons, and bundled them together. Then I said: By the One who honored Muḥammad, none of you shall raise his head without me striking what is between his eyes! I drove them to the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ, and my uncle ʿĀmir came with Ibn Mikraz, leading his horse, leading seventy [captives], until we stood them before him. He looked at them and said: "Let them go — let the beginning of treachery be theirs." The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ pardoned them, and the verse was revealed: {And it is He who restrained their hands from you and your hands from them} [48:24]. Then we returned to Madīnah and stopped at a place called Laḥy Jamal. The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ sought forgiveness for whoever climbed the mountain that night as a scout for the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ and his companions. I climbed it that night two or three times. Then we arrived in Madīnah, and the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ sent his riding animals with his servant Rabāḥ, and I was with him. I went out with Ṭalḥah's horse to graze it among the riding animals. When morning came, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿUyaynah al-Fazārī had raided the riding animals of the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ, driven them all away, and killed their herdsman.
