English Translation

Zayd ibn al-Ḥubāb narrated to us, he said: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Shurayḥ narrated to me, he said: I heard Muḥammad ibn Sumayr al-Ruʿaynī say: I heard Abū ʿĀmir al-Tujībī — my father said: and others said al-Janabī, meaning other than Zayd [said] Abū ʿAlī al-Janabī — say: I heard Abū Rayḥānah say: We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a military expedition. One night we came to a hilltop and spent the night there. An intense cold struck us, to the point that I saw men digging holes in the ground to enter them, casting their shields over themselves. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw this among the people, he called out: 'Who will guard us this night? I shall supplicate for him with a supplication in which there will be great merit.' A man from the Anṣār said: 'I will, O Messenger of Allah.' He said: 'Come forward.' So he came forward, and he asked: 'Who are you?' The Anṣārī identified himself, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ opened with supplication and made it lengthy. Abū Rayḥānah said: When I heard what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ supplicated with, I said: 'I am another man [who will volunteer].' He said: 'Come forward.' So I came forward, and he asked: 'Who are you?' I said: 'I am Abū Rayḥānah.' He supplicated with a supplication less than what he had supplicated for the Anṣārī, then he said: 'The Fire is forbidden for an eye that wept — or cried — from the fear of Allah, and the Fire is forbidden for an eye that stayed awake in the path of Allah' — or he said: 'The Fire is forbidden for another eye, a third' — which Muḥammad ibn Sumayr did not hear. Others — meaning other than Zayd — said: Abū ʿAlī al-Janabī.
