حَدَّثَنَا رَوْحٌ حَدَّثَنَا زَمْعَةُ بْنُ صَالِحٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ ابْنَ شِهَابٍ يُحَدِّثُ أَنَّ أَبَا أُمَامَةَ بْنَ سَهْلِ بْنِ حُنَيْفٍ أَخْبَرَهُ عَنْ أَبِي أُمَامَةَ أَسْعَدَ بْنِ زُرَارَةَ وَكَان
َ أَحَدَ النُّقَبَاءِ يَوْمَ الْعَقَبَةِ أَنَّهُ أَخَذَتْهُ الشَّوْكَةُ فَجَاءَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَعُودُهُ فَقَالَ بِئْسَ الْمَيِّتُ لَيَهُودُ مَرَّتَيْنِ سَيَقُولُونَ لَوْلَا دَفَعَ عَنْ صَاحِبِهِ وَلَا أَمْلِكُ لَهُ ضَرًّا وَلَا نَفْعًا وَلَأَتَمَحَّلَنَّ لَهُ فَأَمَرَ بِهِ وَكُوِيَ بِخَطَّيْنِ فَوْقَ رَأْسِهِ فَمَاتَ

English Translation
Rawḥ narrated to us: Zamʿah ibn Ṣāliḥ narrated to us, he said: I heard Ibn Shihāb narrating that Abū Umāmah ibn Sahl ibn Ḥunayf informed him, from Abū Umāmah Asʿad ibn Zurārah — who was one of the naqībs (tribal leaders) on the Day of al-ʿAqabah — that he was afflicted by al-shawkah (a painful abscess). the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to visit him and said: 'What a bad death for the Jews!' — twice — 'They will say: Why did he not ward off [illness] from his companion? I have no power to bring him harm or benefit, but I shall try for him.' He ordered him to be cauterized with two lines above his head, and he died.
