English Translation

Yūnus narrated to us: Ḥammād — meaning Ibn Zayd — narrated to us: Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd narrated to us, from Bushayr ibn Yasār, from Sahl ibn Abī Ḥathmah and Rāfiʿ ibn Khadīj, that ʿAbdullāh ibn Sahl and Muḥayyiṣah ibn Masʿūd went to Khaybar for a need of theirs. They parted ways, and ʿAbdullāh ibn Sahl was killed. They found him slain. Muḥayyiṣah and Ḥuwayyiṣah, the sons of Masʿūd, and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Sahl, the brother of the slain man — who was the youngest of them — came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The one closest to the blood claim spoke first, and those two were older. the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Let the elder speak first.' So they spoke about their companion's case. the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Establish your claim for your companion — or your slain — by the oaths of fifty of you.' They said: 'O Messenger of Allah, it was something we did not witness, so how can we swear?' He said: 'Then the Jews can clear themselves with fifty oaths from them.' They said: 'They are a disbelieving people.' So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ paid the blood-money from his own resources. He said: I entered an enclosure of theirs and a she-camel from those camels that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had paid as blood-money kicked me with her leg. Khalaf ibn Hishām narrated to us: Ḥammād ibn Zayd narrated to us, from Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd, from Bushayr ibn Yasār, from Sahl ibn Abī Ḥathmah and Rāfiʿ ibn Khadīj, from the Prophet ﷺ — the like of it.
