Hadith #214

English Translation

Hāshim ibn al-Qāsim narrated to us: Ayyūb ibn ʿUtbah narrated to us: ʿAṭāʾ Abū al-Najāshī narrated to us: Rāfiʿ ibn Khadīj narrated to us, he said: My uncle Ẓuhayr ibn Rāfiʿ met me and said: 'O nephew, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has prohibited us from something that was beneficial to us.' I said: 'What is it, uncle?' He said: 'He prohibited us from renting our fields — meaning our land at Ṣirār.' I said: 'O uncle, obeying the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is more deserving.' the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said — then: 'How do you rent them?' He said: 'For water-channel produce, date-syrup pots, and measures of barley.' He said: 'Do not do that. Cultivate them yourselves or let others cultivate them.' He said: So we sold our properties at Ṣirār. ʿAbdullāh said: I asked my father about the narrations of Rāfiʿ ibn Khadīj — sometimes he says 'the Prophet ﷺ prohibited us' and sometimes says 'from his two uncles.' He said: 'They are all authentic, and the dearest to me is the narration of Ayyūb.'
