ʿUqbah ibn ʿĀmir narrated: I met the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said to me: "O ʿUqbah ibn ʿĀmir, maintain ties with the one who cuts you off, give to the one who deprives you, and pardon the one who wrongs you." Then I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he said to me: "O ʿUqbah ibn ʿĀmir, control your tongue, weep over your sins, and let your house suffice you." Then I met the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said to me: "O ʿUqbah ibn ʿĀmir, shall I not teach you sūrahs the like of which was never revealed in the Torah, nor in the Psalms, nor in the Gospel, nor in the Quran? Let no night pass you without reciting them: 'Say: He is Allah, the One,' 'Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of the daybreak,' and 'Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind.'" ʿUqbah said: No night passed me without reciting them. It was my right not to leave them, since the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had commanded me with them. Farwah ibn Mujāhid, whenever he narrated this ḥadīth, would say: "Indeed, how many there are who cannot control their tongue, or do not weep over their sins, or whose house does not suffice them."
